Labour of Love - A legacy of achieving an enterprising way of life

About the impact of Karakoram Area Development Organisation (KADO) 1997-2010

Set against the lofty peaks of Karakoram, Western Himalayas and HIndukush, the documentary chronicles the triumph of will and resilience of the high-mountain communities of Hunza located in the north-western part of Pakistan. It tells a story of transformation brought about by the sheer labour of love, vigour and creativity of a handful of indigenous craftswomen, artisans and people with special needs in pioneering a self-sustaining model of entrepreneurship in the shape of the Karakoram Area Development Organisation (KADO) supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Driven by a passion to preserve the past and better the future, a group of enterprising young women and special people set out to revive traditional crafts and local skills in embroidery handed down through generations, opening up avenues of profitable professions for a more secure and enterprising future!

Karakoram Area Development Organisation (KADO) runs development programmes that focus on creating income and employment opportunities for women and disadvantaged groups in Gilgit-Baltistan through an innovative enterprise creation programme, developing market value-chains in ethnic embroidery, needle work, carpet weaving and gemstones cutting, polishing and jewellery-making.
